A man currently serving a Conditional Sentence Order has been remanded into custody after public reports of a snowmobile being driven on the roadways in town on Feb. 22.
Smithers RCMP said they received numerous reports of a snowmobile being driven on the perimeter trail and roadways within town. Officers located the snowmobile and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however the driver fled on foot. After further investigation, officers located and arrested an individual.
Ashton Lewis was found to be bound by a Conditional Sentence Order that included a 24-hour curfew.
“Community safety is a shared responsibility. We are grateful to our community who continue to report concerns and to our justice partners who work alongside us to support accountability,” said S/Sgt. Ryan Law.
The BC Prosecution Service has approved a charge of Obstructing a Peace Officer in relation to the individual allegedly running from police. Violation tickets were also issued under the Motor Vehicle Act for operating without insurance and failing to register the vehicle.
Following a bail hearing, Ashton Lewis was remanded into custody.
A Conditional Sentence Order is a custodial sentence served in the community under strict court-ordered conditions.
If those conditions are not followed, the individual can be brought back before the court.
