Traveller charged with trafficking after meth found wrapped as gifts in suitcase

A 25-year-old traveller has been charged after a large amount of methamphetamine was seized at Vancouver airport.

A 25-year-old traveller has been charged after a large amount of methamphetamine was seized at Vancouver airport.

On July 18, 2025, Canada Border Services agents at Vancouver International Airport seized two suitcases belonging to a traveller headed to Hong Kong. Inside, they found 29 kilograms of meth, wrapped as gifts. The amount of meth represents 150,000 doses.

Agents arrested the traveller linked to the suitcases, who was handed over to the RCMP.

“This seizure is another great example of the dedication and expertise of CBSA officers as they continue to work hard each and every day to prevent dangerous drugs from crossing our borders,” said Nina Patel, regional director of the CBSA’s Pacific region.

Shiyu Deng, a 25-year-old citizen of China, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession for the purpose of exporting, and exporting a controlled substance.

Deng remains in custody until a court date on Aug. 6.
