Coquitlam steak house set to close after 25 years

Mr. Mikes is closing in Coquitlam. Find out more.

A Coquitlam steak house that’s been part of the community for more than two decades is set to close.

Mr. Mikes, located at 2991 Lougheed Hwy., will serve its last meals on April 26.

In a post shared to the Instagram page operated by the local outpost, the restaurant team noted its “deep appreciation for every visit, every conversation, and every memory shared” at the eatery.

“With heartfelt gratitude, we want to thank our incredible guests, team, and community for your support over the years. Your loyalty, kindness, and connection have meant more to us than words can express,” they wrote. “Thank you for being part of our journey, we hope to see you again before we officially close our doors at the end of April.”

Headquartered in Burnaby, the restaurant chain has several locations throughout B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

The Metro Vancouver outposts, including one on 200th Street in Langley, have largely shuttered in recent years. The Coquitlam Mr. Mikes marks the final restaurant location for the company to close in Metro Vancouver.

The next closest location that is still open is located in Chilliwack.

Founded in 1960, Mr. Mikes started with a single restaurant on Granville Street in Vancouver that was opened by two brothers, Bob and Nick Constabaris.

The eatery was long known for its menu deals, including a 1986 value-priced ad for a Super Mikeburger with a “generous 5-ounce charbroiled patty” and all the fixings, plus a side of fries, coffee or tea, soft drink and a slice of pie. All for just $4.99.

In recent years, it has evolved with a theme of “steak house casual.”

The news comes amid a tough time for Metro Vancouver restaurants, many of which are struggling with high food prices, commercial real estate costs, staffing challenges and more.
