Key components arrive for Prince Rupert’s REEF project

Prince Rupert’s liquefied petroleum gas and bulk liquids terminal at its port continues to grow.

Earlier this month, the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF) construction team successfully offloaded key infrastructure components that will advance the continued build-out of AltaGas and Royal Vopak’s joint-venture project.

The recent shipment included one accumulator, the first of three to arrive, which is equivalent in size to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or about half a football field, according to AltaGas.

The large refrigerated tanks designed for temporary storage of propane and butane are the largest of their kind anywhere in the world.

The shipment also included two large, horizontal cylindrical storage vessels called bullets, which will maintain pressure and store product before loading onto export vessels destined for Asia.

“This achievement underscores the dedication and precision of the REEF project team and partners,” AltaGas stated. “Their collaborative efforts continue to drive progress on this transformative energy infrastructure initiative.”

Construction materials and equipment will continue to arrive at Ridley Island as the facility is being built. Over $710 million has already been invested with Canadian-based suppliers for the build-out, according to AltaGas.
