Drivers heading to and from the B.C. Interior are being warned to expect gusty winds through Sunday.
A special weather statement from Environment Canada released Sunday morning says strong, gusty southwesterly winds are likely along the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) from Hope to Kamloops and along Highway 3, as well as further east in the Kootenays.
The statement covers a large swath of the B.C. Interior, including the South Thompson, Shuswap, Nicola, Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna, Manning, the Skagit Valley, Similkameen, the Okanagan Valley, the Boundary region, and East and West Kootenay including Cranbrook.
“A cold front associated with a strong low pressure system passing through northern British Columbia today will sweep across the southern Interior,” said the statement.
High-sided vehicles could be pushed around by the wind and drivers are advised to secure loose objects, the weather agency said. Mountain weather can change suddenly so prepare for hazardous driving conditions, it said.
“Prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services and utilities,” reads the statement.
The gusty conditions are expected to ease in the evening as the system moves on.
