Trump taps Dan Bishop for budget role

President-elect Trump on Tuesday announced his nomination of Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) to serve as deputy budget director at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Trump announced the news in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday evening, describing the North Carolina Republican as “a tireless fighter for our MAGA Movement in the House of Representatives on the Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees.”

“Dan will implement my cost-cutting and deregulatory agenda across all Agencies, and root out the Weaponized Deep State,” Trump added.

The move comes not long after Bishop, who will not be returning to Congress next year, lost the race to become North Carolina’s attorney general.

In his announcement Tuesday, Trump lauded Bishop’s prior experience in “the North Carolina House, Senate and, as a County Commissioner, while racking up a 30-year career as an aggressive and successful business litigator in trial and appellate courts.”

“Dan earned his JD, with high honors, and a B.S. in Business Administration, with highest distinction, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” Trump also said.

During his congressional stint, which began in 2019, Bishop has gained attention as a member of the hard-line conservative House Freedom Caucus.

While he is not among the eight GOP members who voted to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last year, he was notably the first Republican to call for his removal amid criticism over the former leader’s debt ceiling deal struck with President Biden.

Trump also announced he’s picking Ed Martin to serve as the OMB’s next chief of staff.

“Ed previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Ed Blunt. Together with Phyllis Schlafly, they co-wrote ‘The Conservative Case for Trump,’” Trump wrote. “Ed has served as Chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, and RNC member. Ed is a winner who will help Make America Great Again!”
