On December 7, Jorge Díaz-Rullo repeated Stoking the Fire 5.15b (9b) in Santa Linya, Spain. Open by Chris Sharma way back in 2013, the climb is considered a benchmark for the grade. The route is characterized by relentless power endurance sequences, with no rest in between, making it a real endurance challenge.
Stoking the Fire has been repeated by many top sport climbers, all confirming the grade. Adam Ondra climbed the line in 2016 and Jakob Schubert repeated it in 2018. Since then, it’s seen repeats from Stefano Ghisolfi, Jonathan Siegrist, and Sachi Amma.
“It is an honor to be able to climb one of the most benchmark routes in the world, with previous repetitions of reference climbers,” said Díaz-Rullo on Instagram. “It has always been a route that has caught my attention and although I tried it a few attempts last season, I had not found the time to focus on it. This time it was a good choice as a side project because it’s very good for the skin and perfect for the endurance training.
“I never thought I would be able to do it so quickly, in fact, [this 5.15b] has taken me the fewest attempts so far. I really like the climbing style and I enjoyed each of its moves. Stoking the Fire is awesome! Thanks to everyone for the support and the belays. It’s not time to relax, A lot of work ahead!”
This summer, Díaz-Rullo repeated Adam Ondra’s Move and Change, grading both routes 5.15b/c with kneepads. In February 2023, he FA’d his first-ever 5.15c, Mejorando la Samfaina in Margalef. He made his first 5.15c repeat in October 2013 with Alex Megos’ Bibliographie in Céüse. He has many 5.15b routes to his name, including a repeat of Chris Sharma’s Sleeping Lion, which he completed in February 2024.
