Suspect in fatal UnitedHealthcare CEO's shooting contests extradition

Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the individual accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, contested his extradition to New York in court on Tuesday, according to a court spokesperson.

Manhattan prosecutors formally charged him for killing Thompson and issued an arrest warrant in an effort to expedite his extradition.

However, Mangione’s attorney, Thomas Dickey, said he would request a hearing challenging the order. Dickey has 14 days to file on his client’s behalf.

Mangione is currently being held without bail in Pennsylvania where he was apprehended for possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and falsely identifying himself to the police.

A McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pa. tipped off law enforcement which led to the suspect’s arrest.

He was found eating fast food with a New Jersey ID and a gun.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) condemned the widespread attention Mangione was receiving.

“Some attention in this case, especially online, has been deeply disturbing, as some have looked to celebrate instead of condemning this killer,” Shapiro said during a press conference Monday, referring to some reports on the internet that show a “lack of sympathy.”

He reiterated that Mangione was “not a hero.”

“In some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this: He is no hero,” the governor said.
