BURST(NewsNation) — As the world readies to welcome in 2025, New York City is preparing for the annual New Year's Eve ball drop with extra security.
The New York Police Department is preparing for a million people to descend on Times Square, with a security perimeter in place and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds already forming the day before.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said there are no credible threats at this time.
"There are no specific credible threats to the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration," she said. "However, we have been operating in a heightened threat environment since October 7, and we remain vigilant."
The perimeter extends from 39th Street up to 58th Street, and street closures will begin at 4 a.m., isolating Times Square.
There will be uniformed and plainclothes officers on the ground along with K9 teams, mounted police, helicopters and drones in the sky and boats on the rivers.
One risk is pickpocketers amid the crowd of a million as well as at area hotels where many go to celebrate.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said the NYPD will be at maximum staffing, the Port Authority will be vigilant, and the National Guard is standing by in case anything happens.
