Canadian climber, author and skier Chic Schott has been awarded the Order of Canada in 2024 along with 87 other people including legendary alpinist Barry Blanchard – read more about Blanchard here.
Based in Banff National Park, Scott has been one of the most influential Canadian mountaineers of all time. From his many books, such as Pushing the Limits and Powder Pioneers, to a history-making ski traverse of the Canadian Rockies to alpine first ascents, Scott has had his finger on the pulse of mountain culture for over 50 years. In 2022, he was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame.
“Mountain climbing is a very difficult sport to communicate and to understand because it’s all about style – it’s not about getting to the top of the mountain – it’s about how you got there,” he said in an interview Banff Film Festival diretor Joanna Croston here. He’s an honorary member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, the Calgary Mountain Club, and the Alpine Club of Canada. He received the Bill March Summit of Excellence Award at the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
A select few of his accomplishments including the Jasper to Lake Louise High Level Ski Traverse over 300 km and 21 days, the first winter ascent of Mount Assiniboine, climbed Myagdi Matha (6,400 m) – the first Himalayan mountain climbed by a Canadian, and completed the high level ski traverse from Rogers Pass to the Bugaboos over 130 km in 15 days in 1973.
