Baltimore bridge collapses after cargo ship collision: Live updates

A search-and-rescue operation is underway, and a state of emergency is in place, after cargo ship crashed into a major Baltimore bridge overnight Tuesday.

The cargo ship Dali hit a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge around 1:30 a.m., causing the steel structure to fall into the water. Emergency responders said on Tuesday morning that at least seven people are in the water, and efforts are underway to rescue them.

The bridge, on Interstate 695 around Baltimore, carries tens of thousands of vehicles each day. Francis Scott Key Bridge, named for the writer of the national anthem, was opened in 1977.
