Chris Sharma Establishes New 5.14d Deep Water Solo

On December 19, Chris Sharma made the first ascent of Vision Quest, a 5.14d (9a) deep water solo line in Mallorca, Spain. He spent over 30 days across six months projecting the route. “Really proud of this one!” said Sharma on Instagram. “One the best and hardest psicobloc lines I’ve ever climbed. I had to dig deep and work my ass off for this one.”

“Means a lot to add a new [gem] to the collection of hard epic deep water solos in Mallorca!” he continued. “No doubt the late December freshness added to the intensity! One of those last day last try sends and a sweet way to wrap up the year.”

Sharma is no stranger to hard DWS first ascents. In 2006, he established Es Pontas 5.15a in Mallorca, attempting the crux seven-foot dyno over 50 times before the eventual send. In November last year, he made the FA of the 100-ft Black Pearl 5.15a in November. You can read an interview with him about the climb here. Other impressive DWS first ascents of his include Face Your Fear 5.13d, Big Fish 5.14c, and Alasha 5.14d.
