Sean Bailey recently made the sixth ascent of Alphane V17 (9A) in Chironico, Switzerland. Established by Shawn Raboutou in April 2022, the problem saw three repeats later that year. Aidan Roberts and Will Bosi topped the line in October 2022 and Simon Lorenzi made the fourth ascent two months later in December. Jakob Schubert was next in line, topping the problem December last year, skipping the V16 grade.
Alphane was the world’s third V17, coming after Nalle Hukkataival’s Burden of Dreams and Daniel Woods’ Return of the Sleepwalker. With Bailey’s send, Alphane once again becomes the V17 with the most ascents. Burden of Dreams has the second most, with five ascents.
Alphane is Bailey’s second of the grade. The 28-year-old recently announced his first ascent of Shaolin V17 in Red Rock, Nevada. In January this year, he made the first ascent of Devilution V16, a longstanding open project in the Buttermilks. In October, he made the fourth ascent of Ryuichi Murai’s Floatin V16 in Japan. He sent his first V16 in 2020 with Nathaniel Coleman’s Grand Illusion V16 in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah. He has many V15s to his name and one 5.15c, Bibliographie.
